Ayata is a young grafaiai who uses his creativity and cleverness mainly for two things: pulling pranks here and there to keep himself entertained most of the time, and getting his way from getting free alcohol to convincing someone else to do part of his work when taking on odd jobs for money.

He always puts in the bare minimum effort at his jobs (except when it comes to painting); he’s a liar, coming up with whatever his mind can think of whenever he’s asked something personal, as long as it’s entertaining enough.

History

Ayata was born deep in a forest in Noir Vale, son of Midori Futagawa, the head of the Futagawa family, a family of Grafaiai renowned for their lineage of great masters of painting, born with the well known Grafaiai trait of producing their own pigments thanks to their peculiar saliva...

Bamboo brushes came into Ayata’s hands for as long as he could remember, and his first strokes came thanks to the inspiration brought by the existence of his precious older sister, Ayame, whom he admired more than anyone in the world, and who practiced her drawing diligently in front of him. Ayata received strict teaching in drawing and painting from a very young age, and he focused on it together with his sister, making it his world. On the other hand, his mother was cold and demanding, always reminding them of the importance of continuing the family legacy.

At 10 years old, thanks to his focus on practice, he was already able to draw everything that fascinated him: trees, Pokémon, objects and, above all, his sister. He developed a great passion and love for drawing and painting because he felt he could make eternal that which he cherished more than anything in the world; he could create scenes using those precious elements that seemed to live forever on the paper. His sister accompanied him and applauded his progress. For Ayata there was nothing better than recognition from her.

However, not long after, his paintings managed to stand out more than hers, mainly because of the vibrant colors of his pigments which, as mentioned earlier, came from his saliva and could only be created by him.

His mother noticed it quickly and began to show special interest in him, reflecting this not only in her demands, but also in her way of showing affection. Ayata obeyed the strict orders, studied etiquette, dressed as required, and ate properly to obtain the best quality pigment from his saliva; however, inwardly he hated that something as precious to him as his drawing was rigorously judged by his mother and his teachers.

however time passed...

...A beautiful bamboo brush dancing with elegance over delicate silk, guided by Ayata’s hand, before some nobles and wealthy merchants who had traveled great distances just to appreciate the movement of his precise brushstrokes which, accompanied by beautiful intense colors, created rivers that seemed to flow intensely, birds that appeared to move their wings, and human figures which, with exquisite delicacy, balanced the imposing mountains with vegetation whose distribution on the canvas achieved a dynamic composition worthy of the ovations of that select audience.

It was a summer afternoon like so many others for Ayata at sixteen years old, one of the many bitter memories he would now like to forget, memories marked especially by his mother’s intense gaze that judged his every gesture and movement; and by the heartbreaking melody of the koto played by his precious sister, who confined herself to playing behind an elegant folding screen while great masters presented themselves before Ayata and spoke of his great potential...

Ayata silently hated it all: the nobles and wealthy merchants willing to pay great fortunes for his works, the great masters who boasted of predicting his successful future, his mother with that strange conditional affection, and above all himself for having taken the smile from his sister. He hated everything with such fury that his blood boiled; nevertheless, he limited himself to going on with his life, trying every day to cheer his sister up with his desire to see her paint and draw those works that he admired most in the world. However, everything changed the day he and his sister proposed to their mother that they do a presentation together, to show works they had been creating, to which their mother mockingly refused. The conversation turned into a chaotic argument between mother and son; and that night Ayata decided he was going to stop painting. His mother responded with a hard slap followed by a hysterical laugh that accompanied her face along with her pair of empty green eyes.
“what a disappointment” were his mother’s last words during that argument before leaving the room; while kneeling on an elegant cushion, his sister remained silent with an unexpected look of relief that Ayata was only able to notice by glancing sideways.

From that point on, Ayata actually stopped painting and drawing, and what had initially begun as affectionate words from his mother, trying to persuade him, ended up turning into aggressions in the form of insults, shoving, and slaps, reflecting how desperate she had become.

The day of the presentation arrived. Ayata continued refusing to appear before the guests, so his mother, driven by desperation, resorted to her last plan: she took his sister Ayame and dressed her in the most elegant kimono that Ayata had, styled her hair with the servants’ help exactly as Ayata always wore it during his exhibitions, and delicately painted the beauty marks on her face and hands.
By sunset, Ayata met with his sister, who looked exactly like him. She agreed to appear in his name that night, and he locked himself in his room.

When dawn came and the event was over, he watched her whitout being noticed, and to his surprise, he found on her face the smile she had lost a long time ago, the one he loved more than anything in the world.
That night he returned to his room, cut his hair, and remained sleepless, tormented by his thoughts.

From then on he began to behave differently, he put all his manners aside, started going out from home regularly to nearby towns to drink all night and sleep with strangers; acting with the freedom he had always desired; however, the arguments with his mother only grew worse, mainly because of her fear that he would be recognized by others behaving in such a way, thus staining his own name and that of his family; his sister also worried about that, so he decided to leave home for a place where it would be certain that no one would recognize him.

His mother agreed to let him go on the condition that he change his name in front of others and return home every 4 months to provide his sister with enough paint so that she could work under his identity. He agreed to this, and left, devastated by the fact that the person most precious to him, his beloved sister, was happier without him by her side.
He decided to leave her everything... his identity, his kimonos, his pigments and his future, in exchange for her beautiful smile and the koto that had borne witness to that lamentable story.

He is currently in the village of Scorched Mountain under the name Hisaya, on his way to a new village to live in, after having been discovered as an artist (they only discovered that he knows how to draw, since he still draws and paints in secret; however, they did not discover his true identity, yet that was enough for him to decide to leave). Now he wanders around homeless and without money, since his money was stolen on the way; however, he is happy that they left him his sake and the koto that his sister gave him.
