Personality
Life was not kind to Oenan but she’s learned to not allow that rough start keep her down.
She’s composed, unshakable in most scenarios. There’s little that has happened that she hasn’t endured to some extent in life. She’s learned to be observant. It allows her to gather intel, and she can then adjust to situations as they transpire.
She keeps things practical. She doesn’t have lofty goals or wishes other than to live comfortably. And who doesn’t want that? There’s no drive to get revenge or obtain some high standing. Comfort, contentment and ease are all she strives for.
Oenan stands at 5 foot nothing, is attractive but otherwise unassuming. Most would pass her by without a second glance which she’s perfectly fine with. She blends in relatively easy and her stature makes it easy to vanish, even without any ninja arts. Oenan is also very mischievous. Playful and flirty as long as it scores something good for her she doesn’t mind. She can cause problems for others later and isn’t concerned with anyone enough to care about the repercussions. In her line of work, patience is an asset. She knows time is the ultimate arbiter of their fates. She’s perfectly happy to wait if it will make her situation better.
Due to the lack of trust in anyone, Oenan in turn doesn’t take connections seriously. Everyone is a means to an end. She is deceptive because of this. Smiling and easy going on the surface while plotting something nefarious for her own gain on the side. She will exploit anyone she can to get what she wants. Men, women, children. It doesn’t matter. Any situation is worth the gamble if it means she can retire into an easy life.
And once she does have what she wants, greed takes over. She isn’t charitable at all with the strict exception of little girls. She sees herself in them. If she happens upon one truly struggling, she’s been known to part with a few coins or guide them to a better chance. She won’t take them in though, she knows she’s no good for anyone.
While she wishes for comfort, she thinks very little of herself. She knows the things she’s done to get by and knows her worth is next to nothing. But as long as she’s comfortable, it’s something she can live with.
History
Oenan was born Seri Kobayashi. A name she chose to shed once her mother abandoned her.
The mother she was born to had nothing. Nothing to gain, nothing to lose and nothing to live for. She gave birth to a daughter she did not want and once she was old enough to walk took her into the city to lose her in the throng of people. She had her wait for her on a corner and simply never came back to get her. Her mother felt she was old enough to make it on her own at the tender age of five. Even leaving ehr in another kingdom entirely to avoid ever seeing her again.
Seri would have waited there forever for the only mother she ever knew.
Lost and alone she eventually got picked up by several people over the years, Some promising to look after her, others who simply wanted to use her for their own ends. Being passed from person to person, job to job and location to the next wore on her. No one cared about her, no one loved her and the world only wanted to abuse her for itself. She made the mistake of trusting some people, only to be back stabbed or taken advantage of in the end. Over time she grew harder and colder in return. Perhaps not outwardly but internally. She still smiled as smiles got you a warm bed on a cold night. But no one ever made it past that hardy exterior time and life had encased her with.
One day, at the age of 22 she was caught stealing from a local ninja in Noir Vale and nearly got away with it. Initially she was captured and slated for either execution or life imprisonment. Thankfully, seeing she was skilled and easy on the eyes she was given a home and a second chance at life. Working as a ninja she is still given the freedom she’s had as well as some purpose. But no one presses her to belong and she likes it that way. She took the new name of Oenan, a derivative word for a poisonous plant because she’s mostly been left to grow and move unnoticed and causes pain in her wake.
