Personality

Michio is a quiet man, though not necessarily a shy one. He doesn't feel the need to fill silence for the sake of filling it, and can spend hours working beside another person without saying much beyond what needs saying. This is (in his view) good company. Those expecting conversation from him may find him difficult at first, those who are comfortable with themselves, and silence, tend to get along with him rather well.

He is serious about his work and takes considerable pride in being good at it. The caves surrounding Noir vale are as familiar to him as the village streets might be for others. He has a knack for remembering strange bends, narrow passages, changes in elevation, and old mining routes with ease. He enjoys this familiarity, but what truly grabs his interest are the places he doesn't know. A new shadow to explore will always draw him on.

Michio is stubborn enough to squeeze through a narrow opening simply to discover what's behind it... only to then be sensible enough to spend the entire time complaining to himself about what a stupid idea it was. He knows perfectly well that caves are dangerous, and when it comes to others he takes these things seriously. If it's just himself? Well, someone has to find out now don't they.

For all his gruffness, he has a pronounced protective streak. It tends to show itself through small practical gestures rather than open affection. He fixes things, carries the heavier load, moves himself between someone else and danger, or comforts those who may be frightened of the dark. He is altogether worse at accepting the same treatment from others. Pride makes it difficult for him to admit when he is hurt, frightened (yes he does get frightened), overwhelmed, or simply wrong. Being relied upon feels natural, relying upon someone else? Not a chance.

There is a gentler humor beneath the seriousness though. Michio is fond of dry observations, particularly when he's comfortable enough with someone to tease them. His expression doesn't always change when he's joking, which can cause problems, but he's developed the habit of inventing increasingly rediculous explanations for things rather than admitting he doesn't know the answer.

History

Michio was born and raised in Noir Vale, and while it seems rediculous to him now, he used to fear the caves. As a boy, darkness felt enormous. A lantern could illuminate the ground beneath his feet, but everything beyond its reach seemed capable of hiding the world. The crystals didn't help. Their reflections made distant lights appear where no light should have been, and a signle sound could return from three different directions. His mother, and direct caretaker, had a simple solution...

She sang~

Nothing elaborate, only a quiet lullaby she used whenever Michio became too scared to move. She would walk a little ahead of him, holding his hands and sing him through the unknown.

"Little bone, little bone,
Don't fear the deep.
Mother is near you,
Though Mother may sleep.

Little bone, little bone,
When lost and alone,
Listen, my darling...
I'll lead you home."

She also taught him to pay attention. Water had a direction, air whispered from it's sources, and some passages were heated as you descended. Crystals could make useful landmarks if you remembered their shapes instead of trusting their light. If he became lost, panic was the enemy. Cave-ins, washouts, and dead ends could all be dealt with as long as you kept a cool head.

As Michio grew older, there eventually came a time when his mother's voice rang ahead of him in the caves, but there seemed to be no footprints... no warm pressure of her hands.... and no matter how far he walked he couldn't seem to find her again. He doesn't discuss this period of his life, and the people closest to him know enough not to press. Still, it was at this point that he changed. Feeling an inner fire, he has taken on singing the song himself, and taking her words to heart, he keeps moving forward.

The caves that had frightened him as a child gradually became the place where he felt most comfortable. Michio began accompanying other miners and eventually took up the work himself. It seemed to suit him. There was satisfaction in the physical simplicity of it and he learned quickly. Years underground gave him a strong working knowledge of the tunnels, and the winding routes leading in and out of Noir Vale. Some he learned from old miners, others he found himself. He began making a habit of exploring openings and mapping out new shortcuts and hideaways for future use.

When travellers nee dassistance navigating the caves, Michio sometimes acts as a guide. He knows which routes are reliable, which passages flood, where old cave-ins have forced detours, and several shortcuts that he refuses to explaint o people he doesn't trust. He has also gotten lost.... even with folks in tow. He doesn't advertise these encounters, but they tend to be his favorite as he likes the challenge and novelty of the spaces he's unfamiliar with.

Additional

Michio is much more social and communicative when underground.

He likes quiet company, underground rivers, rainy wether, maps, old tools, hot food after a long shift, wood and bone carving, strange geological formations, and finding places he hasn't seen before.

He dislikes unnecessary noise, wasted materials, careless explorers, people borrowing his tools without asking, being fussed over when injured, and anyone treating the caves as though they're harmless simply because villagers travel through them every day.

He knows a large number of miners' superstitions. He insists that most of them are nonsense while faithfully observing several others.

Question of the Day1

QOTD #11how does your character handle getting sick? Do they still go to work?

Mad denial. Michio is horrible about taking care of himself, especially when he is sick. Luckily as a fire type, he tends to burn off all the bad junk in his system so he'll probably just be seen as flushed while working. Maybe dizzy or sneezy, face drainage, all the great signs. If it's serious, he'll maybe consider taking a nap. But that's emergency level drastic measures.
